Africa United

Djembe Klas

djembe class2

Djembe: All levelsdjembe class
We have classes for every level. Whether you’ve never played an instrument before or you’re already active in the scene, we have a drum class for you. The djembe is an instrument just about anyone can learn. The learning curve is somewhat different to other instruments – it’s easy to pick up but difficult to master! If you’ve always wanted to drum then come to one of our welcoming classes.

Doundoun class
About the Dunun Class
Our ongoing Thursday night Dunun Classes cater both to students who want to develop their playing in an ongoing class, and to drummers looking for a casual or one-off dunun session.
Prerequisites: Some drumming experience (minimum one cycle of class or percussion experience).

About the Dunun

Tap into to the heart of West African rhythms and explore the dunun! These drums are at the core of traditional ensembles – a true understanding of this music really starts with the dunun. If you’re already a djembefola, playing the dununs will improve your timing, soloing skills and your ability to listen to the ensemble. Our workshops will develop your ability to navigate polyrhythms, improve your hand independence – and it’s also great fun to let loose on a big drum!

Want to take your playing to the next level? This is the class for you!
Our Performance Skills Class is focused on polishing a core set of rhythms to a performance standard. You’ll need to know your way around the djembe (being at the Intermediate level or above) and admission is via invitation and expression of interest. Classes don’t follow the standard blueprint. During our sessions we refresh, refine and reinvigorate a set of rhythms, work on new material and use other music techniques to grow your playing. The experience isn’t restricted to the studio – you’ll be given the chance to perform at community gigs and events, as part of our performance.

What to Expect
• tightening arrangements
• learning rhythms inside and out (3 Accompaniments, Duns, Intro, Break, Outro & Song)
• music dynamics and interactive movement sequences
